Join us this Saturday at Club Guesthouse for a special set from iconic Harry McCanna, ahead of fabric's 25th-anniversary tour. With roots in London's Undersound and co-founder of NorthSouth Records, Harry's known for his deep, minimal beats and vinyl mastery. A resident at fabric, his sets are an exploration of the underground.
GH021 features the opening hour-plus from Harry's performance during fabric's 24th-anniversary celebration. Taking the stage in Room 1 at 6am on Sunday, following Tomas Station & O.Bee, Harry had a well-defined vision for his performance. This set stands out as one of his most cherished experiences at the club to date.
Tune in & read our short chat with Harry, anticipating his Guesthouse debut on Sat, Feb 17 for fabric25 world tour (tickets here).
What drives you?
A few things drive me. Of course the passion and for both playing and making music will always be first, and then getting to share that passion with others—whether it's friends I work with or new faces on the dance floor—is incredibly fulfilling. We have an amazing community of people involved in our scene, it's an ever-inspiring pool to draw from. Curiosity also motivates me. I've always found myself asking how the things I love are made and really enjoy the process of figuring it out, despite the occasional frustration. There's also a bit of self-doubt in there as well. You're never going to push yourself to be as good as you can be if you're too content with what you're doing.
What music makes you tick?
So much, It really depends on the day. I do love ambient and more chilled stuff, especially during the week. This, combined with a bit of routine and a handful of good habits helps me find balance between gigs. But that’s not set in stone; some days or weeks could be all hip-hop or bands or jazz or anything, everything has its purpose. And naturally, the music I play is always on my mind, and usually on my floor, as it get’s sorted into piles of records for the upcoming gigs.
Who inspired you to take this hobby seriously?
I've met so many inspiring people over the years, but the ones who really made me take this hobby seriously were the group of friends who first got me into DJing and showed me the ropes. I still speak to many of them as regularly as I can. Even if they're not as involved in music as they were back then, their opinions and advice still mean a lot to me.
Who do you admire most?
Anyone who's working hard to find their own creative voice. It's easy for people to just aim for what they see working and try to fit themselves into what's already there, but encountering someone with their own unique vision—in music, art, or life in general—is always an inspiring experience. It may take longer for it to work out, but it's always worth it.
Favourite track ever?
That really depends on where, when, and how I'm feeling, and there are so many potentials. But if there's one track I'm sure I'll be listening to for the rest of my life, it's Jon Hassell - Last Night The Moon Came.
What would you say is your superpower?
I’m pretty good at making smoothies.
